Klaus Obermeyer came to Aspen, Colorado from Germany in 1947. In an interview with the Aspen Times, Klaus said, "What was sensational was the snow. I'd never seen that powdery of snow, that light, that fluffy," Obermeyer said. "Aspen is probably the best rounded ski resort in the world." For the love of the snow, he settled in and began working as a ski instructor for the Aspen Ski School. During his time as an instructor, Klaus noticed that his students would quickly get cold and wet and the day of skiing would always end too early. He wanted skiing to be fun and accessible to more people, so taking from his experience working as a mechanic on cars and planes, he got to work on creating one of the biggest brands in ski wear.
Klaus Obermeyer is credited with developing the first down parka, created in his attic and converted from his goose down comforter. Along with Friedl Pfeiffer, he also developed the first high-altitude suntan lotion. In 1950 Klaus officially started his business in his attic and developed sweaters, down coats, wind shirts, and more.
The Sport Obermeyer factory opened in Aspen, CO in 1961. There the company developed some of the first waterproofing technology to hit the ski world, among other innovations. Obermeyer has continued their founding tradition of bettering snow sportswear tech from waterproofing, to stretch technology, to breathability. They even have an entire page on their website explaining and outlining the modern tech their products are equipped with.
This year, Klaus turned 98, and continues to be involved in his business, which shows his deep love for the snow sport world. In celebration of the company’s rich history in the ski and ski gear world, Obermeyer is releasing their Heritage Collection that pays visually appealing homage to the styles of the 60’s and 70’s. The Heritage Collection from Obermeyer offers modern top of the line technology with a retro, yet timeless look.
Here are some of our favorites:
