According to the National Cancer Institute, about 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. That’s 12.5% that is diagnosed with the second highest cancer leading to death, the first being lung cancer. The survival rate is increasing, though, with the biggest factor in the survival rate being early detection. The month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Signs of it are everywhere from sports teams dawning pink on their uniforms to the fundraisers and advertisements. With the heightened exposure, it’s a perfect reminder to get checked and encourage your friends to as well.
Monthly Checks
Something that’s easy for every woman to do is a monthly self-check at home. Pick a day each month to work it into your routine. It’s a very simple process that doesn’t require any extra equipment and takes very little time. There are many instructions and diagrams you can find online if you don’t know or remember how to perform a self-check.
Annual Checks
It’s recommended that women over the age of 40, as well as high-risk women, get a mammogram performed every year. Women who have a history of breast cancer in their family are considered high risk. This is a great time to encourage your friends to get checked too. You can all make a day of it with the appointment followed by lunch and a movie. You deserve a treat for taking action towards your health!
Help Raise Awareness
There are many ways you can help raise awareness and remind other women to get checked. Many cities hold fundraisers whether it is a charity run or other type of event. The National Breast Cancer Foundation provides a place where women can donate towards preventative care, treatment and support to women in need.
It’s important to take preventative actions towards your health and encourage others to do the same. If a simple, 15 minutes addition to your morning routine can potentially save you or a loved one’s life, isn’t it worth it?
