Here at WinterWomen, this season brings so much joy and excitement. We can’t wait to bundle up and explore the frosted outdoors. We also understand though that winter might not be everyone’s preferred season. The chill in the air doesn’t bring the same thrill to everyone. Many people love to hike, bike and run in the summer but once it gets cold, don’t know what to do and hermit with cozy blankets and movies. Don’t get us wrong, a good movie night is always welcome but there’s no reason snow should keep you away from the great outdoors. There are great alternative activities in winter that the summer lovers can enjoy too.
Hiking
Hiking is a great endeavor most months of the year. It’s simple, doesn’t require too much planning and leads to wonderful experiences and views. Once the snow starts falling, trails are covered and many hang up their hiking shoes till spring again. That doesn’t have to be the case. Imagine seeing your favorite hiking views covered in majestic white. Snowshoes provide the opportunity to visit your favorite trails with a whole new perspective. A forest can look completely different in the dead of winter compared to the peak of summer.
Running
One of the easiest activities to participate in warmer months, running provides exercise as well as time for meditation. Snow covered roads and sidewalks often deter runners, understandably so. Surfaces can become quite slick in winter. Pop on a pair of Yak Trax and get back on the track. YakTrax® are a simple device that you can put on most footwear to increase traction.
If you want to change things up but still crave the peacefulness of running, try cross country skiing. With enough snow, many people still visit their favorite running parks, just with a pair of skis on their feet instead of sneakers.
Mountain Biking
Fat tire biking is becoming more and more popular. There’s not a ton different than a traditional mountain bike except for the size of the tires. Amply named, fat bikes have giant fat tires. This helps the bike stay on top of the snow. Many resorts are now providing fat tire trails and there is even a Fat Bike World Championships that just held its second annual race. The best part? A fall won’t result in the same nasty abrasions that traditional mountain biking can create.
Swimming
Swimming requires no change up at all. Just visit your local indoor swim pool to keep the strokes going.
Just for Fun
Maybe you just miss the simple opportunities warm weather provides like playing at a park or summer festivals. Winter can offer similar and fun alternatives. Head to the sled hill or ice rink for some family fun time. Many towns have winter festivals as well that provide music, food and special events.
