We hope you had an amazing Memorial Day weekend, whether you got to take an exciting trip with your family, went hiking and biking, enjoyed a barbeque with friends, or even just relaxed and enjoyed your three-day weekend with some peace, quiet, and much-needed rest. Now that we are back to our normal daily routines, you may be realizing that it is a good time to start budgeting. You want to have spending money for that big trip you have planned at the end of summer, don’t you? Or save up for back to school shopping in the fall? Whatever the reason you want to spend less, we’ve got you covered with our top 5 FREE things to do this spring and summer season.
Art Festival – Check your local listings for an upcoming event involving art. Such festivals consist of booths or sectioned off areas that display the works of various artists including paintings, photography, printmaking, woodwork, jewelry, sculptures, glasswork, and an assortment of other various forms of art. Art festivals are free to the public, although you will have to take the risk of seeing something that you might want to buy to hang on that empty wall in your office. Discovering the works of local artists in your area can make for a fun and exciting (yet very inexpensive) day.
Bike Ride – Since May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, we encourage you to get out of the house and on to your bike! Take a ride alone, go with a friend, or bring the kids. Some cities even have organized “cruiser rides” set up on a specific day of the week where you can ride your bike socially in a large group to different destinations within town. Some of these organized rides have a weekly theme so you can have fun with it and dress the part. If you don’t have your own bike, you can borrow one from a friend or rent one from a bike rental center.
Music Festival - For the budget impaired, nothing beats the price tag of a free music festival and summer is the perfect time for an outdoor concert! Check the internet and social media to see when the next free music festival is happening in your area. Usually there is lawn seating available on a first-come, first-served basis so bring a blanket or beach chair along with your dancing shoes and a picnic dinner and enjoy the great tunes.
Picnic – Is there a cute nearby town or city you’ve wanted to check out? Why not pack up a picnic and just go explore? You can travel through the town down the main roads and check out the shops and restaurants while you pass by, getting ideas for new places to shop and eat at a future date. Stop by the local park and set up a blanket under a big shady tree where you can enjoy a picnic lunch with a girlfriend or the kids. Don’t forget to bring along some fun games like Cornhole or a Frisbee for after feast fun.
Volunteer – If there’s an event you really want to participate in – like a specific 5K run – but you can’t justify the $50 or so it costs to run it, there are always opportunities to volunteer to help out during or after the event. Offering your assistance as a volunteer will result in receiving a free ticket for yourself. This is a win-win for everyone – you have earned your place in this event and the event will operate just a little bit smoother due to your help. Maybe you will perform that much better because you know how much effort was made in putting on the event.
What’s your favorite free or inexpensive summer activity? We’d love to hear about it!
