The Benifets of Merino Wool

merino-woolWool isn’t a new player in the winter game. It has been used for many years to keep people warm during outdoor activities. Its characteristics allow your body to breath while keeping you warm; all this without odor that comes with a lot of synthetic fibers. One may ask, “how could wool get any better?”

Answer: Merino wool.

This wool is superior to almost every other natural or synthetic fiber currently on the market. Here are the benefits of Merino wool.

What is Merino Wool?

Merino wool comes from a specific breed of sheep that hails primarily from the mountainous regions of New Zealand and Australia. The wool from merino sheep is different from that of a standard sheep. It’s finer and therefore softer. And while regular wool tends to be itchy, Merino wool provides a more comfortable, gentle touch.

Warmth

Merino wool also has a great warmth-to-weight ratio compared to other wools due to the fine, small fibers. It has microscopic areas that trap dead air, which traps body heat creating insulation, not unlike a sleeping back trapping air against the body.

Wicking

As with all winter gear, moisture wicking is key. Wool has superior ability to pull the moisture created from sweat away from your body and keep it away from your skin. Merino wool has an increased ability to do this. A Merino fiber can absorb and retain up to 30% of its weight in moisture while still feeling dry to the touch. This same wicking ability helps cool the body as you begin to engage in whatever winter sports of your choosing, keeping your body temperature better regulated.
