I recently visited the American Alpine Club (located in Golden, CO) and they hosted a free film night for Peaks Foundation. Going into the event, I was unaware of Peaks Foundation and what they did as a whole. After a quick briefing and a couple films, I was hooked!
Chloe Chick and Laura Hartstone, the founders of Peaks Foundation, had an idea to bring together a group of women and climb Africa’s three highest peaks in less than three weeks. They called this challenge “3 Peaks 3 Weeks”. Their purpose was to raise awareness and funds in support of three issues facing Africa: education, environment, and health. In January 2007, Peaks Foundation became the first all-female team to summit three of Africa’s highest peaks in three weeks and raised over $385,000 for three organizations in East Africa. Since the first journey of 3 Peaks 3 Weeks, the foundation has had over 44 women taking on the challenge in four years, and raised and distributed over $685,000 to three non-profit organizations in East Africa. Talk about women power!
If you are interested as I am about this challenge and climb, they are accepting applications for 3 Peaks 3 Weeks in South America October 7-30, 2014. Check out the Peak's Foundation website for more info.
